Built in 1675, the Bica dos Olhos is a monument of Baroque inspired design and includes the land and the buildings which, from its time of construction, belonged to Duarte Belo, a Lisbon based shipowner and merchant from that time. From that water spout came the tradition, which passed down from generation to generation of Lisbon people, of washing ones eyes before sunrise because it was said to have properties for curing opthamological diseases.
From that time it was known as the Bica dos Olhos which also gave its name to the Bica neighbourhood. The BICA DOS OLHOS development is located in the historic Bairro da Bica which is considered to be one of the most traditional and genuine neighbourhoods in the capital.
